The ridge extending toward Mt. Rainier is part of the fabled Goat Rocks crest! I’d hoped to include the climax portion of it toward Coyote Ridge as part of my trip, but I had to make choices. I’d been curious about Old Snowy for an awfully long time and I just couldn’t pass it up. Doing both Old Snowy and the out-and-back trip along Goat Rocks crest (8 miles roundtrip from my camp and then another 4 miles to the trailhead) is something ordinarily I would have been capable of but on the way down from Old Snowy I got a bad, bad cramp in my right quadricep. I was FURIOUS! I walked down the PCT from Old Snowy a quarter of a mile to see if I could work out the cramp and it did ease up a tad, but the writing was on the wall. I wasn’t about to be so foolish as to hike a knife-ridge trail 7,000 feet high with a bum leg. I sat down on the PCT and meditated on the views for a couple hours…….
