coo-coo for cocoa puffs on the kuku’i trail
Tonight I explored down into Waimea Canyon on the Kuku’i Trail. I enjoyed this little excursion immensely and I have a feeling it’s going to end up being my favorite walking adventure of the trip! Since we spent the first half of the day snorkeling and swimming, I had a relatively small window of time- but I was in the mood to tax myself……and dropping 2,300 feet in 2.5 miles and climbing back up will do it for pudgy old me. One of the best parts of going down so late in the day is I had the trail for myself. Very rewarding and satisfyingly creepy. I did worry a little about being shot by a wayward pig hunter. There were lots of frogs. I’ve never seen so many frogs as I did on the last quarter mile to the Waimea River, they were hopping left and right in front of me.
I exceeded my allotted time at Wiliwili Camp at the river so I could try my hand at some timed exposures. Fortunately I brought Adam’s Coleman lantern with me. I didn’t need it, though I arrived back at the trailhead barely after dusk.
